Playing with Verity in the back yard today. She loves to spray the mister on the dandelion seed heads.

Thing is, while I am down in the wet grass getting a very difficult manual focus, she more often than not enjoys spraying my legs, arms or head.

It is a little game we play that compensates in terms of challenge for me breaking my rule of finding drops in the wild.

Thanks for making this shot number one on flickr for a while.

This B&W conversion was taken in late day bright sunlight. I used Topaz Adjust for dynamic range adjustment on the original color RAW file, then converted to B&W using a high-contrast red filter.

It seems we can see the whole universe inside a single dandelion.

I take my title from the French philosopher and author of controversial literature Georges Bataille. I read a lot of his work in university. Fascinating writer with truly challenging ideas.

Sedona
Located in Arizona’s high desert under the towering southwestern rim of the vast Colorado Plateau, the city of Sedona is blessed with four mild seasons marked by abundant sunshine and clean air. Ideally, the annual average high and low temperatures are 74.7 and 45.7 degrees, respectively.

Almost the entire world knows that Sedona, strategically situated at the mouth of spectacular Oak Creek Canyon, is a unique place. Characterized by massive red-rock formations, as well as the contrasting riparian areas of Oak Creek Canyon, the area surrounding this beloved community is considered at least as beautiful as many national parks.

The story about how Sedona was named is well known; nonetheless, a brief telling is appropriate. As the story goes, after Theodore Carl Schnebly and his wife, Sedona, moved to Sedona from Gorin, Missouri, the few families living here convinced T.C. to establish a post office in his large home, which already had become the community’s hotel. Various interpretations of this story suggest that he asked the government to name the post office Schnebly Station or Red Rock Crossing. Subsequently, he was told the names were too long, and following a suggestion by his brother, Dorsey Ellsworth Schnebly, he submitted his wife’s name, Sedona. And so it was.
The city of Sedona, one of Arizona’s premier tourism, recreation, resort, retirement and art centers, was incorporated in 1988. Historically, it was a rural ranching community located far off the beaten path, but its unsurpassed natural beauty became nationally known through the motion picture industry. Today, commercials and television shows still are filmed in the unsettled areas surrounding this city, which annually attracts more than 4 million tourists from around the world.

Il Castello di Fénis è uno dei più rinomati e scenografici castelli in Valle d’Aosta. La sua fama è dovuta, oltre che alla sua bellezza, all’elevato numero di torri e bertesche. La complessità architettonica fà si che, visto da media distanza, il turista abbia l’impressione di guardare come un castello fiabesco.

Divenuto il simbolo dell’architettura medioevale in Valle d’Aosta, è oggi una delle più importanti attrazioni turistiche della regione. In questo, vennero portate delle provviste dai Francesi durante la battaglia contro gli Inglesi. Questa durò due settimane; due settimane piene di bombardamenti.

Fénis Castle is an Italian fortress dating back as early as the 1242 AD. The castle is located near the town of Aosta on the Dora Baltea River.
It was constructed under the direction of Prince Challant who owned the region of Val d’Aosta and wanted to use it in order to control the area’s iron trade. Though it has never been assaulted, it is fortified with tall stone walls and several cylindrical towers.
The Castello di Fenis more commonly known as the castle of Fenis is a 13th century castle built by the Challant family. This fairytale like castle took almost 100 years to build and is the best presserved castle in the Valle d’Aosta. It has survived long enough to become a museum today.

Apis è un genere di insetti sociali della famiglia delle Apidae. Due delle specie comprese nel genere possono essere allevate dall’uomo ovvero Apis mellifera e Apis cerana.
L’Apis mellifera, diffusa in tutti i continenti ad esclusione delle zone artiche ed antartiche, è l’unica conosciuta in Europa. L’Apis dorsata risiede in particolar modo in India e nel Sud-Est asiatico, non è una specie domestica, ha la particolarità di costruire il favo aperto ed è di dimensioni ragguardevoli, tanto da meritarsi il nome di ape gigante dell’India. Nelle stesse zone prolifera l’Apis cerana , di dimensioni però più contenute, che ha il suo habitat in Medio ed Estremo Oriente, in particolare in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Siberia, Cina e Giappone.

Honey bees (or honeybees) are a subset of bees, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests out of wax. Honey bees are the only extant members of the tribe Apini, all in the genus Apis. Currently, there are only seven recognized species of honey bee with a total of 44 subspecies (Engel, 1999) though historically, anywhere from six to eleven species have been recognized. Honey bees represent only a small fraction of the approximately 20,000 known species of bees. Some other types of related bees produce and store honey, but only members of the genus Apis are true honey bees.

Here’s Vancouver harbour at daybreak shot from the balcony of our room in the Westin Bayshore. Very similar shot to the last one I posted, taken at night.

I’m looking forward to the best year ever, continuing my commute between Victoria and Vancouver and hopefully opening another office in Washington, DC by the end of the year.

If you find yourself on the Seschelt Penninsula up near Tuwanek Park you might stumble across the Tuwanek Hotel and Cabins. We stayed there last summer. Across the road is this beach and a wonderful view of Seschelt Inlet. This three exposure HDR was taken at twilight. I like how the tonemapping brings out the deep blue and the white clouds.

This is an old shot I stumbled across while looking for some baby photos of my daughter. The crow was sitting on a ittle shed along the Galloping Goose trail. The sky was remarkable – I remember the day well – and my little Casio couldn’t find any detail in the silhouettes. Light HDR treatment on an upsampled version of the original .jpg image.

Yesterday had a weird weather. Dust from Africa was all over Istanbul, and because of that the sky was dark yellow. The dust makes you feel a bit sick. But it’s the way the world spreads it’s minerals. NATO image of yesterday, so it can be understood what I mean.

Daily Photo – Finding Dinner in the Alleys of Kyoto
After exploring an area (and era!) of ancient temples in Kyoto, I was absolutely starving. I tend to get in a "shooting mode" where I do not undertake basic human necessities like eating, sleeping, and making regular bathroom breaks. In fact, Nikon makes this great set of diapers you should try. They’re Japanese so there are little buttons that dispose of everything and leave you fresh as a daisy.

Anyway, after shooting, I headed down into the old part of Kyoto to find a traditional Japanese dinner. I sat there for a long time, enjoying myself thoroughly..
